The Can’t-Miss Nevada Hike for Every Nature Lover’s Bucket List
On the outskirts of Las Vegas lies Spring Mountains National Recreation Area, home to a hiking trail any nature lover should add to their bucket list.
It's almost hard to imagine how much untouched landscape is found outside of the glittering lights and the concrete jungle of Las Vegas. At least that's how I feel. While Vegas is certainly a world of its own and a fun one at that, there's a natural world not too far away. Found just outside of Las Vegas, Spring Mountains National Recreation Area is a 316,000-acre protected area that offers an incredible city escape, and Eagle's Nest Trail is a hike here that you should add to your Nevada nature lover's bucket list.
Overseen by the U.S. Forest Service and located within the Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest, the Spring Mountains National Recreation Area encompasses a wide variety of landscapes. Any adventurer, hiker, or nature lover would enjoy exploring the desert, mountains, cliffs, canyons, hills, and forests found here.
For those who are looking for a hike that's easy enough to do, I suggest taking the Eagle's Nest Trail which is one of the best trails in the Spring Mountains National Recreation Area. The 2.7-mile loop trail is perfect for anyone who wants to get out into nature for some fresh air and exercise, and it's easy enough for children to hike as well!
The trail starts at an incline through a pinyon-juniper forest and plenty of other flora to see along the way including shrubs and banana yucca. Perhaps you should bring a guidebook along so you can identify the variety of plants and trees along your trek.
In addition to the wide variety of plants and trees along with wildlife, the views are nothing short of spectacular! Bask in the beauty of Kyle Canyon's South Rim, the Las Vegas Valley, Fletcher Peak, Charleston Peak, and other geological features within the recreation area — there's no other place quite like this in Nevada!
While Eagle's Nest Trail is easy, there are some inclines and loose rocks along the way. Wear your hiking boots, take a backpack with supplies, bring plenty of water, and wear sun protection and you should be good to go on this incredible hike!
