The Winter Wonderland Montana Hike You Must Do Before Spring
Sypes Canyon near Bozeman offers a scenic winter hiking experience with snowcapped views and well-marked trails.
Most Montanans will agree that winter has just about overstayed its welcome at this point. But with another month to go (and the likelihood of lingering snow long after), we may as well embrace it. Believe it or not, some of our hiking trails are best enjoyed in the winter. If you live in the Bozeman area, check out Sypes Canyon before spring.
Sypes Canyon is a short 20 minute drive from Bozeman, so you won't have to drive too far in treacherous conditions.
The trail stays pretty popular all year, but it's definitely much quieter in the winter.
The gorgeous trail is about 6 miles in its entirety.
You'll go through forest and switchbacks, which take you straight to a scenic overlook.
The trail includes a somewhat steep incline and some switchbacks, but it's not exceptionally challenging.
The snow stays fairly packed down, and everything is well-marked.
You'll love these sweeping snowcapped views of Bozeman and the Gallatin Valley.
Despite the cold temperatures, the fresh air feels amazing.
This trail is part of the longer Bridger Foothills trail, so you can veer off at any point to take your hike across the foothills in either direction.
This can be a quick hike or a full-day excursion.
