This Quiet Montana Trail Is Challenging, But the Views Are Worth Every Step

You'll feel like you are standing on top of the world on this Montana trail.

Montana certainly has countless hidden gems—destinations with something to surprise you. I love places like Ringing Rocks near Butte or the Garden of One Thousand Buddhas in Arlee. On the surface, these destinations offer countless beauty but as you explore and look closer, you’ll discover there’s even more to fill your day with adventure. That’s why I also love the Bear Creek Overlook Trail, just a short drive from Victor, MT. This hiking trail is spectacular but as you continue your journey, you’ll find something unexpected to wow you. Adventure calls for you here.

The Bear Creek Overlook Trail is a hike that belongs on every bucket list—it checks off many boxes. It’s scenic. It’s not too long. It’s typically not too busy. And it’s filled with a few wonderful surprises.

This Montana hike is going to challenge you in several ways—beginner hikers may find that this trail is quite challenging. The Bear Creek Overlook Trail is an out-and-back hike that is approximately 4.5 miles. However, you can expect to climb more than 1,100 feet in elevation. Be prepared to take plenty of breaks and rest when needed.

You will find the Bear Creek Overlook Trailhead approximately 11 miles from the town of Victor. I recommend entering the trailhead into your GPS for step-by-step directions to find it. Be mindful that the road leading up to the trailhead is quite narrow, so take it slow.

Once you are on the trail, you will be reminded of just how blessed we are to call Montana home. As you climb, you’ll hike through the thick and beautiful Bitterroot National Forest. You’ll find yourself surrounded by trees on all sides and may even hear wildlife in the distance. Portions of this trail can be a bit rocky, so watch your step and be prepared for a handful of switchbacks you will need to conquer.

Although, there are several surprises you’ll come across on this trail. If you visit in the summer months, for example, you’ll find colorful wildflowers along your way. In the autumn months, vibrant fall foliage will add even more color to your route.

I also recommend that you slow down and enjoy the quiet. The peace in the area can soothe your soul. It can also help you hear nearby waterfalls as they tumble down. You may not see these falls up close while on this hike, but the tumbling water adds to nature's soundtrack.

Although, nothing compares to the breathtaking views you will receive when you reach the top of this trail. The mountain views are spectacular, and on clear days, you will be able to see for miles.

As you stand on the rocky cliffs, you’ll not only capture remarkable scenes but you’ll also feel like you are on top of the world. These are photo-worthy moments when you’ll want your camera readily available. Stand or sit for a moment and let the surrounding landscape become ingrained in your memory. It is places like this that make Montana so remarkable.

If you can time your adventure just right (and you have the proper gear!), plan your trek early in the morning or in the evening when you can watch the sunrise or the sunset. The fiery sky helps you feel far away from the worries of reality and makes your journey even more unforgettable.

Your adventure is calling on the Bear Creek Overlook Trail. All you need are your hiking shoes, bug spray, hiking gear, and time to admire this area we call home. This is the perfect hike to discover Montana.
