There’s a Canyon in Montana That Looks Like the Grand Canyon

Montana is full of beautiful scenery and adventures. Whether that means a hike through the wilderness or a walk through your own backyard, there's always something incredible to take in. And, when you start considering the truly magnificent spaces, it's clear that any time we spend in this state is time well spent. One of those magnificent spaces is a canyon that's so large and impressive it reminds us of the Grand Canyon—Blodgett Canyon. And while this lesser-known canyon is certainly special, it's still a bit under the radar for those who come to visit places like Glacier National Park.

Why Blodgett Canyon Feels Like Montana’s Grand Canyon

With granite cliff walls that tower above you and a deep valley created by ancient glaciers, Montana’s Blodgett Canyon is the type of place that will inspire you the minute you arrive. Located in the Bitterroot National Forest near the small town of Hamilton, this canyon may not be as extensive as the Grand Canyon, but it still offers exceptional landscapes and panoramic views. And the best way to experience these jaw-dropping views in person? On the easy Blodgett Canyon Overlook Trail.

What to Expect on the Blodgett Canyon Overlook Trail

This truly incredible natural wonder in Montana offers some of the best views in the state. And, the journey to get there is just as special. The Blodgett Canyon Overlook Trail offers nearly 3 miles of fun. Most importantly, hikers who take on this out-and-back trail will end up at Montana's own version of the Grand Canyon.

The route begins about 100 feet into the Canyon Creek Trail. It's fairly simple to follow, and it's considered great for beginner hikers. During the spring and summer months, the trail is illuminated by vibrant wildflowers. In the fall, vibrant autumn foliage surrounds you, making you feel like you are in a painting rather than reality.

The route is certainly one of the most beautiful in the state, offering fantastic views along the way. Blodgett Canyon is just one of many incredible scenic canyons sitting on the eastern flank of the Bitterroot Range. This Montana natural wonder is the result of glaciers sliding through the area during the ice age. These formed massive U-shaped valleys, granite mountains, and cliffs. And the beauty of all of this is undoubtedly some of the most impressive in the West.

What to Know Before You Go

The out-and-back trail means you'll make your way to the canyon overlook, then turn around and head back the same way you came. Easy! Just be prepared to gain more than 500 feet in elevation. Fortunately, however, if you find that the climb is a bit challenging, there are plenty of shady spots where you can stay out of the sun and take a break. And even though the trail is short, make sure to bring plenty of water and snacks—preparedness is critical no matter how long your journey. Just make sure that you leave no trace.

While you can visit the area any time, be aware that there may be seasonal road closures that will keep you from being able to access the trail. Always check the official Forest Service website first before heading out. Also, be sure to let people know where you're going and when you plan to be back. Safety first, kids!

This Montana canyon may remind you of the Grand Canyon or another incredible canyon in the West. Either way, we are certainly blessed to call the Treasure State home, especially when we can find hidden gems like Blodgett Canyon. It's a true treasure.
