With a Fishing Pond and Mineral Spring, This Family-Friendly Park in Montana Is the Best Summer Day Trip

This family-friendly park in Montana is great not only for outdoor recreation such as fishing and hiking, but it's also loaded with history.

While Montana offers endless opportunities for summertime adventure in the Great Outdoors, some families still stay quite busy throughout the summer and may not have time to get away for days at a time. For those with limited travel time, you might be looking for day trips that the whole family can enjoy without breaking the bank and still enjoy plenty of nature therapy. This lesser-known state park makes for a great option for those looking for a family-friendly park in Montana to explore this summer.

Giant Springs State Park is a small but beautiful park on the outskirts of Great Falls in central Montana. The famous Lewis and Clark Expedition first documented it in 1805. Clark wrote that it was "the largest fountain or Spring I ever saw."

Giant Springs State Park is so named for being one of the largest freshwater springs in the country. This tranquil park is one of the lesser-known state parks in Montana, which is great for those wanting to avoid large crowds in the summertime.

The spring's temperature rests at a constant 54 degrees Fahrenheit and its water originates from the snowmelt from the Little Belt Mountains about 60 miles away.

The park is perfect for a family day trip because of its diverse recreational offerings, such as hiking, fishing, birding, nature tours, wildlife viewing, tons of children's activities, and much more.

For those who love fishing, Giant Springs State Park offers a local fish hatchery and fishing pond, as well as excellent fishing along the nearby Missouri River. Don't forget your fishing license!

The fishing pond is 3/10 of an acre in size and is located next to the Lewis & Clark Interpretive Center. Speaking of, I'd highly recommend spending some time in the Interpretive Center. There are several educational exhibits and videos to learn about the region, plus the staff often hosts live presentations. Visit the website to see the schedule.

And if you're lucky, you might spot some local wildlife. The park draws plenty of waterfowl species such as American white pelicans, warblers, willow flycatchers, bald eagles, great horned owls, belted kingfishers, and much more.

Giant Springs State Park offers a true taste of Montana's natural beauty while being easily accessible and enjoyable for all ages. These crystal clear blue waters are a testament to the natural beauty found at Giant Springs State Park.

The park is free to Montana residents (and only an $8 day-use fee for non-residents and Montanans who don't pay the State Parks Fee with their annual registration).
