Sluice Boxes State Park in Montana offers a scenic and historic hiking experience through Belt Creek Canyon.
Montana's Sluice Boxes State Park is an underrated gem. Located in the stunning Little Belt Mountains near the tiny town of Belt, the park features the jagged cliffs and ledges of the Belt Creek Canyon. If you hike the beautiful Sluice Boxes Trail, you'll get to take in the rugged beauty of the area.
The Sluice Boxes Trail is just under four miles in length, and it's a fairly easy trek.
To reach it, just take US-89 to Sluice Boxes State Park and look for the signs.
This 1,450-acre park occupies eight miles of the Belt Creek Canyon.
And the entire trail is visually stunning.
The park was named after the gold-panning trays prospectors used, and you'll definitely see evidence of the area's mining history here.
Remnants of mines, a railroad, and historic cabins line Belt Creek, and it's wonderful to see the pieces of Montana's past. The Barker Mines and the Montana Central Railroad are part of the park's rich history.
However, the rugged natural beauty you'll see is just as amazing as the mining evidence.
There is a unique beauty here that you won't find anywhere else in Montana.
After about two miles, you'll be treated to some seriously stunning views.
Be aware that there are some rocky cliffs here and the terrain can be steep. Step with caution.
The Sluice Boxes Trail is a beautiful, energetic hike in an absolutely incredible park.
While the park is open year-round, summer is definitely the best time to explore it.
