The Montana Cave Tour At Lewis & Clark Caverns State Park Belongs On Your Bucket List
Lewis & Clark Caverns State Park in Montana offers guided tours of its stunning limestone caverns, making it a must-visit for both locals and tourists.
Montana's landscape is so diverse, you can find practically any terrain here -- and that's one of the many (many) reasons we love it. However, there are a few things we recommend every to single Montanan and out-of-state tourists alike, because we believe they showcase the Treasure State at its finest. Taking a cave tour at Lewis & Clark Caverns State Park is one such experience.
Lewis & Clark Caverns State Park is located about 12 miles east of Whitehall in Jefferson County.
This was Montana's first official state park, founded in 1938.
Of course, the history of this gorgeous land goes back much further -- the Lewis & Clark Expedition passed through the area and it was familiar to Native Americans long before that.
These days, it's an excellent place to go hiking (there are 10 miles worth of trails) and camp overnight in the summer.
The main attraction is the limestone cavern, one of the most decorated of its kind in the country.
The caves are lined with stalactites, stalagmites, columns, and helictites.
The caverns are naturally air conditioned and electrically lit, making them perfectly safe to visit.
In order to see them, you'll have to go on a guided tour.
While the park is open every day, the cavern tours are only available from May 1 - September 30.
The tours offer an up-close-and-personal look at the caverns, and you'll learn all kinds of fascinating facts about the cave (and Montana in general).
The cave tours have been operating on a limited basis this year due to Coronavirus safety concerns, but we highly recommend adding this to your bucket list for next year.
Whether you're a new resident or a lifelong Montanan, you'll be blown away that this massive cave is hiding in the Treasure State.
