The Montana Hike That Leads To The Most Unforgettable Destination
The Lava Lake Trail in Montana offers a rewarding hike with stunning lake views surrounded by mountains.
Let's face it -- even the most adamant hiker can admit that the best trails in Montana come with some sort of a reward, like a waterfall or a sweeping view. And if you happen to be hiking in the Gallatin Gateway area, you can choose a trail that leads to one of Montana's most visually stunning lakes. Come along as we show you why the Lava Lake Trail in Montana is so fabulous, and why it simply must be on your hiking bucket list!
The Lava Lake Trail (also called the Cascade Creek Trail) begins at the Gallatin River.
To reach the trailhead, take Highway 191 south into Gallatin Canyon. Drive 20 miles to the Lava Lake trailhead parking area, just north of the Gallatin River bridge.
At nearly 6 miles in length, this is no short trek.
But although the hike is strenuous at times, it's not extraordinarily difficult.
Due to dense forest, views are limited at first. But once you near the lake, the scenery goes from pleasant to breathtaking.
Even if you don't typically enjoy an intense hike, these views make it all worth it.
This expansive lake sits surrounded by mountains, making for a magnificent sight.
If you can brave the elements in autumn, the colors are fantastic.
If the weather allows, you'll find plenty of places in the area to camp.
And it's so beautiful, you might want to stay as long as possible.
The Lava Lake Trail is incredible, and the lake is well worth the hike.
Just make sure to pack plenty of water, snacks, and bear spray.
