The Bighorn Canyon, which Montana shares with Wyoming, is a national treasure. And while its vast, wild landscapes are truly enchanting, the nationally-known recreation area isn't even our only canyon. In fact, we'll go on record as saying that, while impressive, the Bighorn Canyon isn't the Treasure State's best. That honor goes to Gallatin Canyon. Spend a little time there and you're sure to agree.

From Yellowstone National Park, the Gallatin River flows into Gallatin National Forest to merge with the Jefferson and Madison Rivers about 30 miles northwest of Bozeman. It eventually joins the Missouri River.

You'll be miles from any kind of city, surrounded by canyon walls, lush, green forest, and mountain peaks. It doesn't get better than that.
Because the Gallatin River Canyon is so narrow, it offers some serious fun for whitewater rafters.
There's even an infamous stretch in the Gallatin River Canyon that presents a continuous stretch of Class IV whitewater, which is known as the Mad Mile. Kayakers and whitewater enthusiasts love it—but that area should never be explored by beginners or on your own.
There are numerous hiking trails in Gallatin Canyon, which is a wonderful way to explore.
Big Sky is located midway down the canyon, so you can even hike to Ousel Falls.
The Gallatin Canyon is a wildly underrated destination.
If you've forgotten how beautiful it is, come check it out when the weather allows.
