The Amazing Lakeside Beach Every Montanan Will Want To Visit
Flathead Lake State Park in Montana offers a clear lake with various outdoor activities and camping options.
When most people imagine a beach town, they probably imagine palm trees, boardwalks, and bars. There's nothing wrong with reveling in the sun on the coast, but that's not always possible when you live in a landlocked state. Plus, there can be something chaotic about busy beach towns. If you want to enjoy time outside in Montana, we love the idea of heading to a local lake. And with no waves, a lake beach in Montana can be a great option for kids. There are quite a few great options, but we love this one the most!
Flathead Lake State Park, located in Kalispell, is one of the best places to experience the best of Montana's outdoors.
Its namesake lake is considered one of the clearest in the country due to its low nutrient levels that keep away algae. If you love tropical ocean beaches, this is a great alternative!
The lake is huge, comprised of 191 square miles. And, there are 160 miles of shoreline.
In fact, it's so large that the surrounding state park is divided into five different units. Each has a unique feel, but all offer access to the lake and lots of fun activities. You can also choose to spend the night in each of them.
Some of the camping options include RV hook-ups, while others can just accommodate tents. There are even yurts that can be reserved in advance.
But, for those who prefer to sleep in their own beds at home, there's plenty to do on a day trip. Plan on bringing in a picnic lunch to enjoy along the shore.
From swimming to boating to laying in the sun, it's easy to stay busy all day.
Flathead Lake State Park is open throughout the year. If you plan on camping, be sure to check out the official Montana Fish, Wildlife, and Parks website for availability. The size of the park is so large, it's separated into a few different areas. Each of these has its own camping rules, so be sure to check them before making plans. You can see more photos and learn more about the park by following Flathead Lake State Park on Facebook.
