The Hiawatha Trail is about 15 miles long, covering parts of Idaho as well as Montana.

The trail begins near East Portal, an unincorporated community in Mineral County.

There are actually 10 tunnels on the trail, the first of which is the St. Paul Pass Tunnel.

The St. Paul Pass Tunnel was part of the Milwaukee Road's Pacific Coast Extension project in the early 1900s.

The train tunnel was eventually abandoned, sitting dormant for more than 20 years before being rededicated in 2001 as part of the Hiawatha Trail.

Now you can ride your bike through a little piece of history.

Tunnels aside, every mile of this trail is gorgeous.

It's easy to see why it's one of the most popular bike trails in Montana AND Idaho.

Mountain bike rentals are available for this beautiful trail — and if you're not up for a round trip ride, shuttles are available.
