This Little Known Hiking Path in Hickory Canyons, Missouri is Our Favorite First Hike of the Year
Lovers of all things natural, this one's for you: the stunning Western Trail in Missouri makes for an idyllic winter wonderland.
'Tis the season for resolutions, and one of the most popular New Year's resolutions is to be more active. Hidden away in Missouri at the scenic Hickory Canyons Natural Area is a short-and-sweet hiking trail sure to entice both nature lovers and hikers. It's stunning year-round, though in the coldest months, it becomes a veritable winter wonderland. I recommend the Western Trail, which is one of the coolest hikes in Missouri and my pick for the best "first hike" of the New Year.
With an array of breathtaking bluffs, canyons, and other natural wonders (including seasonal waterfalls), this hike is perfect for any nature lover with some hiking experience who's also willing to risk getting their feet a little wet. Remember that there are several stream crossings, and wear appropriate shoes that won't allow your socks to be soaked.
Western Trail isn't overly long - it's just one mile long - but it can be quite challenging, especially in the winter when everything's frozen over. Fallen trees obstruct parts of the path and require a little climbing to get over, and there are a few creek crossings along the way as well. It can be bitterly cold in the winter, but I promise: this winter wonderland is worth a day trip (or ten.) Winter in Missouri is no joke: it's chilly and quiet, but there's adventure everywhere as long as you know where to look. Wear the proper cold-weather gear, and you'll have no problems frolicking through the wintry landscape.
Given the presence of snow and ice, this trail can be a bit slippery in some sections, so make sure to be prepared for that as well. There is lots of shade and places to rest along the way, and despite the cold, I strongly recommend packing water as well. If you're hoping to run into the waterfall while it's flowing, you'll want to visit following rain or during snowmelt - those times are by far your best bet for an epic experience.
During the warmer months, wildlife watching is a beloved pastime on this hike - but don't let the winter fool you into thinking there's nothing cool to observe. You'll be able to spot an array of wild birds, and sometimes deer and other critters will also make an appearance. Some folks seem to assume that winter is a "dead" season, but this is incorrect - winter takes on a life of its own, and I think you'll fall madly in love with this amazing trail that's sure to thrill all year. Keep an eye out for tracks and try to determine which animal made them!
There are two hiking trails within the Hickory Canyons Natural Area, and this one is my favorite, thanks to the awesomeness it flaunts 24/7/365.
