The Creepiest Hike in Missouri Takes You Through the Ruins of an Abandoned Town

The Lost Valley Trail in Missouri offers a fascinating hike through abandoned ruins and historical remnants.

Abandoned ruins often set our imagination on fire. Even if we know what those ruins once were, we still might think about who once frequented the buildings, the one-time personality of the area, and what happened for those buildings to be abandoned. If you're searching for "abandoned ruins near me," the Lost Valley Trail in Missouri offers a fascinating peek into the past...and it will take you along an abandoned road, through a tunnel, and past some curious sights. We think it's one of the best hiking trails in Missouri. See if you agree.

Expect the unexpected as you make your way along the 6.9-mile Lost Valley, Abandoned Road, and Hamburg Trail Loop near St. Charles. The trail meanders through Weldon Spring Conservation Area along an abandoned roadbed. It generally scores a moderate rating due primarily to the hike's length. However, thanks to the wide trail and relatively level terrain, some hikers consider it easy. In fact, the entire trail is either gravel or paved, which makes it popular among both hikers and cyclists.

Trees shade a good portion of the pathway. However, be prepared with water and sunscreen (as well as insect repellent), especially in the summer, as there are long stretches that provide no shade whatsoever. Carve out enough time for the hike and to stop along the way. You'll pass, for example, an information placard that gives insight into the former town of Hamburg.

Once a vibrant town founded in 1840, its residents were forcibly relocated by the government during World War II. The town was replaced with an explosives production plant. Along the path, you'll see little reminders of what once sat on this now quiet land. For example, you may encounter a lone fire hydrant sitting alone among the trees in the middle of nowhere.

Metal pipes and other debris are visible along the trail, as are the ruins of a brick and mortar building, its chimney the only remnant of the structure that stands to this day.

An abandoned tunnel spray-painted with graffiti provides a glimpse into a mysterious past. Some may call the hike creepy while others may label it eerie, especially due to the little reminders of yesteryear scattered along the landscape.
