The Most Romantic Valentine’s Day Hike You’ll Find in Mississippi

Valentine's Day typically means flowers, chocolates, and perhaps an extravagant dinner reservation. But we'd argue that it would be just as special to spend quality time with a loved one out in nature. If you tend to agree, then we'd like to introduce you to one of our state's most romantic hiking trails: the Little Mountain Trail. It's located in Jeff Busby Park and promises a beautiful, secluded setting for spending time with your Valentine.

Jeff Busby Park can be found in Mississippi's Choctaw County. It's located at Milepost 193.1 along the famous Natchez Trace Parkway. The park is named for Thomas Jefferson Busby, a man credited for authorizing a survey of the Old Natchez Trace. Four years later, this historic route was officially designated as a part of the National Park System. Today, visitors flock to Jeff Busby Park to feel completely immersed in natural beauty.

So much of life seems rushed nowadays, but the Little Mountain Trail is an invitation to slow down. The trail will follow the main road leading in for a bit before joining up with the Little Mountain Trail. Arriving at the trailhead, you'll notice a sign indicating the beginning of the hike. It reads "You can easily complete the loop in thirty minutes. However, the more time you allow, the more you will see and hear." This is especially true when hiking with a loved one; take time to enjoy all the trail has to offer and the conversations it inspires!

The trail itself is well-marked and relatively easy. Over the course of the 1.8-mile circuit hike, you'll gain about 265 feet in elevation. By all accounts, it's a trail that is suitable for most skill levels. The trail's main attraction is the overlook, which on a clear day, allows viewers to see nearly 20 miles into the distance. The ridges and valleys you'll observe from this vantage point are known as the Wilcox, which began some 50 million years ago as sand and mud. Eventually, the layers transformed into the sandstone and shale that form the ridges today.

Another element that makes this trail special is the presence of wildlife. It's possible to hear the scurry of squirrels or perhaps some deer who call this park home. There are lots of beautiful birds, too, so be sure to keep your eyes peeled for friendly forest residents. And don't forget to look down occasionally... you might just find a heart-shaped leaf to give to your Valentine!
