We Love Our National Parks, but This Mississippi Trail Is Just as Enchanting

Explore a restored estuarine marsh tucked away from the busier beaches of the Gulf Coast.

Mississippi is home to a handful of National Park units, including the lovely Gulf Islands National Seashore, shared between Mississippi and Florida. Emerald waters, sugar-white beaches, and picturesque marshes draw countless travelers to the coast each year. But there are quieter places in the region that exude this same charm, and we'd argue that they're every bit as enchanting. One such example is the Weeks Bayou Reserve Trail in Ocean Springs, a treasure trove of natural beauty and a story of resilience. For a quieter, nature-focused adventure, we couldn't recommend this special trail more.

There are many places to admire Mississippi's natural beauty, but the Weeks Bayou Nature Trail is a special kind of place that showcases the region's diverse ecology. After Hurricane Katrina devastated the area, the Land Trust transformed the former site of a private home into a tidally influenced estuarine marsh. Thanks to the volunteers from CDC Climb’s AmeriCorps program, the Land Trust was able to plant native trees and marsh grasses. The former four-foot retaining wall that belonged to the private home was recycled to build a platform for an outdoor classroom dedicated to educating students about the importance of protecting the Gulf Coast’s marine estuaries.

The trail that meanders through the preserve and marsh is short—just half a mile out-and-back—but it's one you'll want to take slowly. The boardwalk trail is well-maintained and offers plenty of space to sit, rest, and admire your surroundings. A visitor center and plenty of signs indicate the unique wildlife that depends upon the reserve for habitat. And, because the terrain is gentle and easy to follow, this is a great trail for even the littlest explorers to enjoy.

After you've spent time appreciating the boardwalk trail, head to the beach for more scenic fun. It's a quieter beach experience that's every bit as beautiful as others in the area. One recent traveler explains what makes the preserve so special: "I love this place. It’s right off the street but quiet. A great place to watch the pelicans and just soak up some natural vitamin D. Balm for my soul! I go as often as possible."

The Weeks Bayou Trail is a quiet yet powerful invitation to learn about the flora and fauna of a lovingly restored estuarine marsh. For more information about the trail, including a map and reviews from fellow hikers, be sure to check out the official AllTrails listing. Dogs are allowed at the marsh but must be kept on a leash at all times. Have you been before? If not, share this article with a travel companion and start planning your adventure!
