This Might Be the Most Demanding Hike You Can Do in Mississippi

This challenging yet rewarding trail will test your limits—and also showcase some remarkable Mississippi history.

The Mississippi landscape is known for being coastal, expansive, and, well, flat. But don't let that fool you; hidden away in the Magnolia State are more than a few challenging trails. One example is the Al Scheller Hiking Trail, located within Vicksburg National Military Park. This trail is strenuous and should only be attempted by those up for the challenge. That said, it's also a lovely, fascinating trail that will immerse you in the region's beauty and historical significance. Curious to learn more? Let's explore!

Once you've arrived at Vicksburg National Military Park, you'll want to find a parking spot at the Visitor Center. Be sure to spend some time here, picking up helpful maps and orienting yourself. Restrooms and water fountains are also available. Please note that you'll need to pay the standard National Park entry fee, which is typically around $20 and is valid for seven days.

Now, the adventure begins. Unlike the other pathways within the park, the Al Scheller Trail is a backcountry trek that winds its way through a variety of terrain: woods, bluffs, shaded fields, and even Civil War earthworks. It's an important reminder that this land once took center stage during the Siege of Vicksburg in 1863, an important turning point in the Civil War. Confederate soldiers, attempting to protect this strategic site, used the landscape as part of their defence. They carved trenches and rifle pits into the ground, some of which you can still see today. When Vicksburg finally surrendered on July 4, 1863, the Union Army gained total control of the Mississippi River.

The trail itself isn't easy to navigate, given the presence of some overgrown vegetation and multiple stream crossings without any footbridges. Most hikers advise only completing a portion of the trail, noting that it's easy to get lost and disoriented. A good turning point is the USS Cairo Museum, which is roughly halfway, and a great place to refill your water bottle.

Here are some other helpful tips if you're planning to visit:

  • Keep recent weather in mind: if it's rained a lot recently, the trail can get quite muddy
  • Bring plenty of water: even if you plan to refill, it's always good to err on the side of caution, especially in intense heat
  • If you plan on going solo, be sure to tell someone your whereabouts: cell service can be spotty, so you'll want someone to know where you are planning to go
