There Are More Pitcher Plants Than There Are Miles Along This Beautiful Hiking Trail In Mississippi

The Mississippi Sandhill Crane National Wildlife Refuge offers a sanctuary for endangered sandhill cranes and unique pitcher plants, making it a haven for nature lovers.

The Mississippi Sandhill Crane National Wildlife Refuge is a beautiful little wildlife refuge that's been a local favorite since 1975. The 19,000-acre refuge is practically a playground for nature lovers and wildlife enthusiasts, and it's one of the best places to see pitcher plants in Mississippi. What are pitcher plants? Read on to find out:

As you may have guessed the wildlife refuge is home to many sandhill cranes.

These adorable critters were once on the verge of extinction. Since the refuge was created in 1975, the population has grown from 30 to nearly 150. While the Mississippi sandhill crane is still on the endangered list, this refuge helps ensure they have a safe habitat to thrive in.

There are a few different trails within the refuge, and the C.L. Dees Nature Trail is one of our favorites.

This trail clocks in at just shy of a mile, making it a quick and easy hike while not compromising on scenery.

Although the sandhill crane may be the most popular attraction, there’s another hidden gem that’s worth seeking out: the pitcher plant.

Pitcher plants are carnivorous plants that thrive in the pine Savana bogs found here.

The plants attract their prey with nectar, but the rim of the plant is slippery and causes the prey to fall into the trap where it’s slowly dissolved.

And that little leaf-like hood? It's to prevent rain from filling up the tube.

Mother Nature is truly fascinating, isn't it?

As you check out the pitcher plants, you could encounter all sorts of wildlife, both big and small.

There are a few seating areas peppered along the trail to sit for a spell and admire the views and do a little wildlife watching.

You never know what other wildlife you're going to see on the trail!

Visit the Mississippi Sandhill Crane National Wildlife Refuge website to learn more and start planning your adventure today. Since this trail is so quick and easy, you may find yourself still itching to hit the trails. Check out the nearby Shepard State Park for more outdoor adventures.
