The Absurdly Beautiful Hike In Mississippi That Will Make You Feel At One With Nature

The Cypress Swamp Trail on the Natchez Trace Parkway offers an easy, scenic hike through a picturesque swamp.

Hiking is the best way to immerse yourself in Mississippi's natural beauty. Our state has an abundance of hiking trails for people of all abilities, and this one is easy enough for just about everyone.

The Cypress Swamp Trail is located on the Natchez Trace Parkway. You'll find it at milepost 122, north of Jackson.

This pretty little trail is less than a half mile long, and it's a flat, easy hike. It's perfect for almost every level of hiker, and great for even small children.

The boardwalk takes you right through the swamp, among bald cypress and tupelo trees. You'll want to plan about a half hour to make this loop.

These hardy trees took root back before water covered this land; they thrive in the boggy conditions here now. Watch for the occasional alligator hanging out on a log.

Other wildlife includes snakes, frogs and birds.

Watch where you're walking! You might see some pretty creatures on the ground in front of you.

Visit the Cypress Swamp Trail daily from sunrise to sunset. It's managed by the National Park Service; there's no fee to visit.

Bring your camera - this place is very picturesque. During summer months, you'll need bug spray because the mosquitoes are thick, but during the winter bugs are less worrisome.
