This Charming Restaurant In The Heart Of Hill Country Is A Mississippi Dream

The Como Steakhouse in Mississippi's Hills Region is renowned for its hickory charcoaled steaks and historic ambiance.

Of all the regions in Mississippi, the Hills Region, also known as hill country, has a terrain much different from the rest of the state. Just as the name implies, it’s hilly – and that’s because it’s located in the foothills of the Appalachians. And while the fact the area offers one-of-a-kind scenery is pretty well known, many are unaware it’s also home to a restaurant that serves some of the best steaks in Mississippi. Take a look:

In addition to well known cities, like Holly Springs, Oxford, and Tupelo, the Hills Region includes several lesser known towns worthy of a visit…and Como is definitely one of them.

The perfect place to "get away from it all and relish the feeling of a small town friendly atmosphere," Como is located in Panola County about 45 miles south of Memphis.

Practically unchanged for over a century, Como’s Main Street is one of its best assets. The charming street is lined with local shops and eateries, including The Como Steakhouse.

Over the years, the small town eatery has garnered a BIG reputation for its "world famous hickory charcoaled steaks."

Despite its obscure location, The Como Steakhouse has won numerous awards. Most recently, its filet mignon was included in Memphis Magazine’s "Top 10 Dishes for 2017."

Each and every one of the steaks is hand cut and aged to perfection.

It’s then grilled on an open charcoal pit that’s situated in plain view – so you can watch as your masterpiece is prepared.

And according to the restaurant’s grill master, Donnell Lewers, the charcoal is the secret behind the mouthwatering steaks.

Earlier this year, Lewers told Memphis Magazine, "A steak needs the flavor and the heat that comes from charcoal. And you can’t just walk away from it. You’ve got to pay attention."

Though the filet mignon is one of the restaurant's most popular cuts, it's not the only one you'll find on the menu. Sure to please any steak lover's craving, the tasty variety also includes rib-eye, top sirloin, Porterhouse, chop steak, and T-bone.

Save room for dessert, and you'll have a choice between homemade cheesecake, pecan pie, or the restaurant's signature - the Como Delight.

The delightfully sweet treat is made with pecans, pudding, and whipped cream.

Since The Como Steakhouse is a local favorite, a wait is likely; however, there's an upstairs oyster bar that's perfect for passing the time.

Aside from the mouthwatering fare, it's the ambiance that makes a lasting impression on diners.

Just like many of the other buildings on Main Street, the one that houses the steakhouse dates back more than 100 years! Step inside, and you’ll find plenty remnants of its age, including a pressed tin ceiling, and original doors, floors, and fireplaces.

The old photos covering the walls are another tell-tale sign of the building's age. Be sure to take a look around for an interesting impromptu history lesson.
