Beautiful waterfalls are everywhere in Minnesota! Popular spots such as Gooseberry and Minnehaha Falls are easy to get to. But the less popular spots are well worth seeking out! Next time you’re looking for a Minnesota nature adventure, consider trekking through a little-known park to discover a secret waterfall that few know about – and fewer have visited for themselves. Take a look:
There’s a park in St. Paul, Minnesota, that is not well known to most. It’s called Shadow Falls Park, located near the University of St. Thomas on Mississippi River Boulevard.
The park is small but beautiful, with a large expanse of green grass that is popular for lounging on warm, sunny days. Pack a picnic and make an afternoon out of it!
A tall World War I monument – in the park since 1923 – makes an interesting backdrop to the grassy area. Take the path to the monument to learn about Minnesotans’ role in the war.
Behind the monument is a large platform overlooking the Mississippi River. The view is simply beautiful!
For those who are keen to explore, there are other interesting views at Shadow Falls Park. Carefully follow one of the unpaved paths down into the woods. They line the top of the steep ravine overlooking the river.
Through the trees, you’ll catch more scenic glimpses of the Mississippi. The paths are rocky and rutted, so be sure to step carefully.
One path in particular leads to an amazing surprise. If you are facing the river, head to the right of the viewing platform. Follow the path, and you’ll soon hear the gentle trickle of a hidden waterfall.
Keep following the path. The sounds of the park and the nearby traffic will fade out, and the sunshine will be blocked by the thick canopy overhead. It's especially beautiful when the leaves change in the fall.
Shadow Falls will soon come into view. This tall, thin waterfall cascades over limestone and shale. Follow along the top of the gorge for a great view.
Continue walking and step over the thin stream that makes up the waterfall. Soon, you’ll see a rugged path to get the bottom of the gorge. Step carefully and you can walk right under the waterfall!
For careful hikers, this secret waterfall is an excellent place to get away from the city. Next time you’re looking for a beautiful adventure, visit Shadow Falls!
