The Under-The-Radar Destination In Michigan With The Most Beautiful Fall Foliage In The State

So, perhaps Grand Island National Recreation Area isn't the most off-the-radar spot in Michigan. However, I'd wager that when most leaf peepers index their favorite autumn spots, they prioritize local destinations that capture the Great Lake State's cozy fall charm— and rightfully so. But Michigan didn't earn its nickname for nothing. That's why I think you'll find the most beautiful fall foliage in Michigan just outside the small town of Munising on Lake Superior.

With a population of just under 2,000 people, Munising— named for the Ojibwe word minisiing, meaning "at the island"— is known as the gateway to Grand Island National Recreation Area. Though it's more commonly considered a summer destination, I'm willing to make the case that this island paradise is at its best in the fall.

Grand Island contains 13,500 acres of dense and thriving deciduous forest.

This means that as the air grows crisp, the island's dramatic cliffsides erupt in riotous autumn color.

Visitors will love exploring the miles of trail that loop around the preserve. Just make sure to bring proper gear. Though they're relatively flat, some of these routes exceed 20 miles in length!

No matter the effort you're willing to dedicate to the island's network of paths, you'll find stunning vistas of Lake Superior wherever you look. When framed with bright yellow leaves, these views of the indigo water are even more breathtaking.

Most outdoor adventurers make the trek via the passenger ferry, which runs during the summer and into October. It's also possible to reach the island on a private boat or even by kayaking! No matter what you choose, planning your passage to this unique spot is part of the fun, and this journey lends the island a sense of remoteness.

There's no shortage of delightful fall getaways in Michigan, but only a few combine rugged cliffs with expansive water vistas and fiery autumn colors. Striking the perfect balance of adventure and approachability, a visit to Grand Island National Recreation Area is an unforgettable seasonal excursion that will deliver lifelong memories. Though it's more popular as a summer destination, we at Only In Your State think it may be even better in autumn. With the sharp contrast between Lake Superior's blue waves and the deciduous forest, this island may contain the most beautiful fall foliage in Michigan.

What do you think? Where are your favorite spots to see the Great Lake State's autumn color?
