Note: While virtual visits were encouraged during the 2020 season, the Peony Garden will be open to the public for 2021.
Nichols Arboretum is located at 1610 Washington Heights in Ann Arbor.
This 123-acre wonderland has been featured in many of our previous pieces, and it’s not hard to understand why. After all, there’s a seemingly endless array of outdoor activities to appreciate here.
Known by locals as The Arb, this breathtaking spot is home to hiking trails, Huron River access, wildlife, and all sorts of special events throughout the year. You’ll quickly notice a sense of serenity.
One of the most spectacular springtime offerings at The Arb is the Peony Garden, which is precisely what it sounds like: a sprawling garden that overflows with lush, vibrant peony flowers.
The garden features 350 amazing peony varieties, so you’ll find no shortage of delight as you stroll through. Take time to immerse yourself in the sweet, distinct fragrance and snap a few photos.
Peak bloom usually begins around Memorial Day and continues until mid-June, so you’ll want to stop by the Peony Garden before the official start of summer. Talk about a magical stroll.
Admission is free, so you can enjoy one of the most marvelous outings within driving distance of Detroit without breaking the bank. You’ll soon be immersed among seemingly endless flowers.
As you plot out your to-do list for the remainder of spring, be sure to include The Arb and its stunning Peony Garden. This is one family adventure that will sweep you away into another world.
