Hike the Newest Heritage Trail in Michigan for an Unforgettable Adventure

Have you ever woken up one morning with a thirst for adventure? Maybe you watched a movie or show that got you excited to get outside and discover new things. Maybe that movie was "The Mummy," and your interest in history was also piqued.

It sounds like a perfect day for a hike along one of the Mitten State's Heritage Trails. These trails are located throughout the state and create a bridge between the area's natural and cultural heritage. Along Michigan's Heritage Trails, you'll find historical markers or kiosks, each explaining a different aspect of the area's history.

The Mike Levin Lakelands Trail is the newest Heritage Trail in Michigan. At 34 miles, it is long, giving you plenty of chances to find adventure... and learn about the area!

The Mike Levine Lakelands Trail begins in Hamburg Township in Livingston County and ends 33 miles later in Blackman Township in Livingston County. Seventeen historical markers along the trail celebrate a different aspect of the area's natural and cultural history. These were installed thanks to a grant from local philanthropist Mike Levine.

Eleven markers were installed in November of 2021. A local graduate student conducted the research, spending time in the communities identifying important stories and taking photos.

This process took the graduate student two full years. The resulting historical markers feature information on the Pottawatomi tribe, local artists, novelists, the area's resort history, and railroads, as you can see above.

Michigan's newest heritage trail takes just over 10 hours to hike. Luckily, all of those hours will be filled with absolutely breathtaking views. Plus, previous visitors report that despite its mileage, it's an easy hike, with a flat surface that is either paved or crushed limestone.

Throughout your hike on the Mike Levine Lakelands Trail, you'll encounter wetlands, woods, pastures, and, of course, the stunning Huron River.

Does more than 10 hours of hiking seem like too much for you, but you still want to experience the adventure of this Michigan Heritage Trail? (Same!) Well, you're in luck because this fantastic trail is also suitable for running, biking, and equestrian use.

Yes, you can ride your horse on this mid-western Michigan nature trail.

Your doggos are also welcome on this gem of a trail in midwest Michigan. The only things not welcome are motorized vehicles and hunting.

Who would want to harm the adorable wildlife along this trail anyway? Previous hikers have encountered turkeys, deer, chipmunks, and more while on the trail. It's also a habitat for some of Michigan's endangered species, including Blandings Turtles, Spotted Turtles, and Eastern Massasauga Rattlesnakes.

If you want to extend your trip, the Mike Levine Lakelands Trail connects to the Pinckney Recreation Area, which offers another 13 miles of trails. It also happens to be home to a stunning wildflower trail.

One last note: this trek is also dog- and horse-friendly. After all that hiking (or riding!), you will surely be tired out.
