You might not want to face the truth, but winter will be here before we know it. The seasons seem to fly by here in the Great Lakes State - perhaps because we’re always having so much fun enjoying our wonderful region. While we’re still ramping up for plenty of fun autumn activities, it’s never too soon to start preparing for wintertime, and the Farmers’ Almanac winter weather forecast offers a glimpse into oncoming cold weather in Michigan.
The Farmers Almanac has long provided extended forecasts for weather conditions throughout the United States. In fact, the inaugural edition of the Almanac was published all the way back in 1818.
You’ve likely seen our Farmers' Almanac feature pieces in previous years, which seek to prepare Michiganders for winter by offering a simplified breakdown of this famous annual report.
For 2022-2023, Michiganders should be prepared to pull those puffy coats out of storage and bundle up with full force. That’s right: temperatures and conditions are expected to be freezing this year.
According to the Farmers' Almanac, Michigan lies in the "unreasonable cold and chilly" region. Brr! Be ready to traverse the sidewalks and drive atop the streets with care, as iciness is expected to abound.
While the overall average snowfall is likely to remain normal this year, we’ll still see some flakes.
The Almanac predicts that cold temperatures will arrive on a gradual basis. January should start out with relatively mild temps before dipping into full-blown winter conditions as the month progresses.
In February, Michigan residents should expect a downturn in wintry precipitation.
Stay away from the states in the "Hibernation Zone." Excessive winter weather is to be expected.
As winter winds down in March, Michiganders will notice many ups and downs. The Almanac explains that March will likely feature long patches of calm weather dotted with a few precipitation-heavy storms.
While the Farmers’ Almanac winter weather forecast isn’t foolproof, it provides a helpful glimpse into what might await us during the upcoming winter season. One thing is for sure: you’ll want to keep your mittens handy.
