You'll find them deep in the woods, and they are fascinating, to say the least.

The Fascinating History Behind These Mansion Ruins in Massachusetts

The 85-acre J.C. Phillips Nature Preserve is located in Beverly. This extraordinary piece of property was once part of Moraine Farm, where John Phillips lived in a farmhouse built in 1882. The original landscaping here was designed by Frederick Law Olmsted and includes a cart path that is now part of the preserve's trail system. Olmstead's most popular piece of work? Central Park in New York City! I love that you can see his work all across the U.S.

After John Phillips died in 1885, his family continued to live on the property. His son, William Phillips, built a large Italianate mansion on top of Prospect Hill in 1913. He named his home Highover. The home, unfortunately, was destroyed in a fire in 1968, soon after William passed away. Today, however, you can climb up the hill and see its ruins and grab some really awesome J.C. Phillips Preserve photos.

Hiking Through J.C. Phillips Nature Preserve

Whether you enjoy history or love seeking out abandoned locales around the state, hiking the J.C. Phillips Nature Preserve Trail is a must. This is an easy, family-friendly trail that offers some beautiful scenery. This hike is approximately 2.5 miles and has very little elevation gain. Plus, the trail is wide and easy to follow, even when colorful leaves cover the trail in the autumn months, or a light dusting of snow tries to hide your way in winter.

Not only will you see ruins here, but you can also enjoy other aspects of the J.C. Phillips Nature Preserve. Immerse yourself in nature by taking a hike along the trail system and visiting the lovely glacial-formed Wenham Lake. This is a beautiful place to slow down and enjoy the sights and sounds of nature. If you time your visit just right, you may even find that you have the area all to yourself, creating a quiet and peaceful day outdoors.

What To Know Before Visiting These Hidden Massachusetts Ruins

Keep in mind that when visiting these historic ruins in Beverly, Massachusetts, the trail can be quite muddy after heavy rain, so plan your visit accordingly. Plus, you will want sturdy shoes as there are some rocky and uneven sections of the trail. You are welcome to bring a dog with you, but they must be leashed. If you plan to spend time at Wenham Lake (which we strongly recommend), swimming and boating are prohibited. As you explore the J.C. Phillips Preserve, watch out for poison ivy that grows in the area.
