Maine might not have the same topographical recognition as some states out west, but it still has a surprising amount of hills and mountains. That's what makes Vacationland such a great place for hiking and exploring outside. It also makes it one of the best places in New England for exploring waterfalls. There are a number of wonderful falls to see, but many require hiking to find, but not all! This waterfall, located in Byron, can be accessed from the road, and it's a summer highlight for many!
Coos Canyon can be found just off of Route 17 scenic highway.
In fact, the drive to reach it is almost as beautiful as the falls themselves.
Formed by rocks in the Swift River, these Cascade-style falls have a 15-foot total drop.
The best time to visit is between April and November when the water is rushing with the spring thaw and summer rains.
While the falls are lovely to look at, we love how accessible they are.
Park at the lot right by the falls, and get ready for a lovely adventure, where, weather permitted, you can even go for a swim!
There's nothing like splashing around in the cool, deep sections of the river while listening to the falls hit the water just a few feet away.
Those more adventurous can try jumping from the surrounding rocks, though this requires a hike making it more difficult. Just be sure to exercise caution around the slippery rocks and falls.
Let your more adventurous friends do that while you enjoy slipping into the water in close proximity to the towel and sunscreen inside your parked car!
We love visiting in the summer to cool down.
But the winter is also a beautiful time to pull over and gaze down below at Maine's natural landscape formed millions of years ago.
