7 Waterfalls In Maine That Are Most Powerful And Best Visited In The Spring
Discover seven impressive waterfalls in Maine that are especially powerful and beautiful in the spring.
There's certainly nothing wrong with winter in Maine, but there's something special about the change of seasons here. As the snow melts and winter thaws, spring arrives with unique things to love and appreciate about the state. High on that list are the powerful waterfalls that are located throughout the state, rushing with the snowmelt in Maine.
1. Riverside Walking Trail and Overlook, Rumford
Take this wonderful walking trail to reach the waterfall on the Androscoggin River. The route is fairly simple to follow and this time of year the falls will be loud and impressive.
2. Upper and Lower Dunn Falls, Andover
This hike to reach this beauty can be considered challenging, but if you're up for the adventure it's worth it for the two waterfalls you'll find. The trail follows the Appalachian Trail for a bit, so you might have some fun conversations along the way.
3. Step Falls, Newry
Take the one-mile trail leading to the base of the falls to appreciate all the power that comes with them when the snow is melting. The falls are impressive year-round, but we especially love spring. The hike should take about 45 minutes and is worth it when you arrive.
4. Coos Canyon, Oxford County
This is a great waterfall for those who prefer to avoid hiking. It can be seen right from the car off of Route 17. It's a great place to enjoy for a full day in the summer when you can swim in the water, but visiting in the spring means a rushing force of water that you won't want to miss.
5. Snow Falls, Oxford County
Flowing from the Little Androscoggin River you'll find four distinct waterfalls. These are beautiful just after a rain, so consider the great to see throughout the spring and into the summer.
6. Screw Auger Falls, Oxford County
This waterfall is sourced by the Bear River and offers two beautiful drops. The first is a 30-foot drop over a granite ledge into a gorge. The second is just below the first and offers another 30-foot drop. The summer is a popular time to visit, but since you can't swim visiting in the spring when the water is rushing means you won't miss out on any fun.
7. The Cataracts, Oxford County
Like each of the waterfalls on this list, spring brings the melting of snow that makes the water roar. But, if you can't make it now you'll have plenty to enjoy in the summer. Each of the falls totals more than 100 feet and sliding around on the natural rock waterslides is always a good time.
