Have you ever heard of Hermon, Maine? It's this picturesque small town in Penobscot County, blending classic New England with rural charm. Imagine lakes, woodlands, and the Penobscot River - it's like a nature lover's dream! And guess what? Tucked away is the Ecotat Gardens and Arboretum, a non-profit spot that's open to the public for free - offering tours, hikes, and gorgeous flower viewing. There's so much to see and do at this hidden gem in the heart of Hermon - it's definitely up there for being one of the best arboretums in Maine.
Ecotat Gardens and Arboretum is like its own little universe, always changing and just waiting for you to explore. Picture this: green as far as the eye can see, with lively gardens and tall swaying trees, creating a magical scene.
Whichever way you turn, there's a new and inviting view, evolving as you wander down paths or through tree-framed openings.
Over this 88-acre wonderland of about 15 acres of gardens, you'll find 60 flower gardens mingling with the matured trees. There are over nine non-native trees and shrubs adding to the mix.
Keep an eye out for the stars of their seasons, like azaleas, lilacs (pictured here), magnolias, smoke trees, and mock orange—they're the real showstoppers.
Want to roam around and explore? There are a bunch of trails dropping down from the gardens into the woods, all linked up with cross paths. Don't miss the 3/4 mile native tree trail – it's got 30 mostly mature trees marked with handy signs. And be sure to snag a guide for the trails before you head out to see what's blooming and other points of interest.
There's so much to do through every season. You can hop on guided garden tours when things are in full bloom in the spring, go hiking and take in all the fall colors, or shred some trails on cross-country skis in the winter. Yes - you heard that right, you can cross-country ski in the winter!
There are also always lots of events and programs going on at the garden for members, visitors, and volunteers to partake in, making Ecotat Gardens and Arboretum a must-visit destination if you're in the Hermon area.
