Follow A Sandy Path To The Waterfront When You Visit Laudholm Beach In Maine
Discover the scenic Barrier Beach Trail at Wells Reserve in Maine, leading to a quiet and peaceful beach.
In a state with as much coastline as Maine there are plenty of ways to see the shore! Drive your car and park in a lot, ride your bicycle or get those feet moving to make your way to a refreshing day. Or, you could mix of all of those things by taking this scenic hike straight to the beach! The coast is a beaut no matter how you get there, but meandering down a path might be the best.
The Wells Reserve at Laudholm and the Wells National Estuarine Research Reserve are sometimes overlooked, but visiting provides the opportunity to see some of the most beautiful scenery in Maine.
Your visit begins at the Laudholm Farm which is on the National Register of Historic Places. From here you can choose your trail.
Our favorite and the one leading straight to the beach is the Barrier Beach Trail.
You'll start at the Knight Trail which provides views over grassy areas with Mount Agamenticus in the distance.
The route joins with the Barrier Beach Trail heading to the beach.
Along the way you'll find yourself in an aspen grove and an abandoned apple orchard. There's tons of wildlife to see here too, making the journey as much about exploration as it is about getting to the beach.
The area includes forest, beach, salt marsh, and pond life ecosystems.
And there are educational placards that ensure you know exactly what you're looking at as you walk.
Ultimately, you'll notice the ground under your feet becoming sandy. This is when you'll know you're there!
Cross the boardwalk and you'll hit the sand!
The beach here will likely be very quiet, which is exactly what we love!
It's great for some peace and quiet, providing a great way to clear your head.
If you visit with friends or family, we recommend doing this trail first and then enjoying some time at the beach. Then, you can head back and explore some of the other trails.
Trails, restrooms, and Laudholm Beach are open every day from 7 a.m. to sunset. You can learn more about visiting by heading to the Wells Reserve website here. You can learn more about the trails at alltrails.com.
