Here in Maine, dining out for every meal is easy. There are plenty of ways to do it inexpensively and there are more than enough restaurants, seafood shacks and food trucks to try. We encourage you to hop in the car, ride your bike or even walk to the nearest locally owned spot. But, once you've filled your belly on the mainland you're going to want to head to the water! This island restaurant can only be accessed by boat and it's well worth the trip!
Unsurprisingly, you'll find the Chebeague Island Inn on beautiful Chebeague Island located off the coast of Yarmouth.
The Inn was originally built in the 1880s and was re-built for modern times in the 1920s.
The island, the largest of more than 200 in Casco Bay, is close enough to the mainland to be accessible, but far enough away to be a true getaway if even just for dinner.
You can access Chebeague using the popular Casco Bay Ferry, which leaves Portland six times a day between Monday and Friday. On the weekends, it leaves the city four times each day.
You can also take the Chebeague Island Ferry, which departs from Cousins Island in Yarmouth 12 times every day.
The end of this article includes links to both schedules.
The trip takes about 15 minutes from Cousins Island, near Yarmouth and about 1.5 hours from Portland.
Dining at the Inn means beautiful views and impeccable service with a comfortable atmosphere.
The inside dining room is warm and cozy.
And the screened-in porch dining room is airy, providing an incredible sunset view.
There's even a private dining room for special events.
If you love eating locally, you'll be in heaven here. Second Wind Farm, located on the island, provides much of the produce used in dishes. And, the Chef’s Garden provides herbs and smaller vegetables.
Chef Matt Ginn oversees the operations here and he can often be seen on the island.
The Inn serves breakfast, lunch, and dinner daily.
There's also a "sunset landing" menu that includes drinks and lighter bites to enjoy just before dinner.
You'll probably want to enjoy that out on the porch.
Dishes such as mussels and frites include locally grown Bangs Island Mussels. You can even arrange for a tour of their farm through the Inn.
For something really special, make sure you're on the island for Sunday brunch!
To make sure you make it in time, you'll probably just want to go ahead and book yourself a room. Something like this might be just the way to wake up!
And, staying overnight also means enjoying an epic Maine sunset with a fully belly and happy heart.
