This Easy, 1.5-Mile Trail Leads To Mariaville Falls, One Of Maine’s Most Underrated Waterfalls

Discover the Mariaville Falls Preserve in Maine, a family-friendly hike featuring beautiful waterfalls and scenic views.

As you start thinking of new ways to enjoy the Great Outdoors in the Pine Tree State, make sure you're giving fair attention to some of the places that aren't in the travel books. There are so many wonderful trails and outdoor areas to explore, many of which are probably new to you. This one, a hike featuring beautiful waterfalls located near the midcoast of Maine, is a beautiful and easy way to see some of the most lovely scenery in the state.

Mariaville Falls Preserve can be found in Mariaville, near Ellsworth. Hidden in the woods, this is a beautiful way to find some peace and solitude without going heavily off-the-beaten path.

The trail is a simple 1.4-miles long and leads on and around the Union River.

Along the route, you'll find a few stairs and wooden walkways that help to avoid muddy feet.

With a relatively short distance and easy-to-navigate trail, this is a great option for families and kids. It's always nice to have a beautiful payoff in the form of a Maine waterfall!

And what a waterfall it is!

To get to the falls, follow the Mariaville Falls Trail at the parking area. The loop joins the Fisherman’s Trail, which leads directly to the waterfall.

There are a number of places to stop along the way for scenic views and even a picnic.

Once you've taken in the flowing waterfall, simply continue on the trail to make a loop back to the parking area.

While the views here are lovely, the area also has an interesting history. A settlement was established here in the early 1800s by William Bingham of Philadelphia. At its height, there was a dam, two wood mills, a tannery, a boarding house, and 50 families! While there's no evidence of that today, it's fun to imagine life here in Maine before we arrived.
