Swim At The Bottom Of A Waterfall After The 1-Mile Hike To Cataract Falls In Maine

Explore The Cataracts in Maine for a short hike leading to beautiful waterfalls and refreshing swimming holes.

Some people think that summer's on the way out, but we like to believe there's lots of warm weather ahead of us before things turn chilly and the leaves begin the change. While we have it, we'll be outside enjoying every ounce of great weather that the state of Maine offers! That means lots of hikes, swimming and enjoying the fresh air. If you're doing the same thing, consider a trip to this waterfall. You can access it using a short hike and the payoff at the end includes a fun dip in a swimming hole.

There are lots of waterfalls to enjoy here in Maine, but you don’t need to head to the huge ones to enjoy what the state has to offer. There are some that offer even more beauty than those that are the most well-known and they’re not difficult to find.

The Cataracts, in Oxford County, can be accessed by taking a 1-mile hike through the woods of the Mahoosuc Public Reserved Land.

You’ll start your journey at the trailhead near the bridge where East B Hill Road heads across Frye Brook. The trail follows along the east side of Frye Brook.

The trail is well-marked, but has rocks and roots so you’ll want to watch your footing.

The first swimming hole you’ll come to is at the end of the trail. This one is smaller than the others but still fabulous.

The larger one can be found by heading back down.

As with all waterfall areas, this one can be slippery and wet so be cautious.

Just be sure to keep an eye on Frye Brook as you follow the trail and you won’t miss the waterfall and the swimming opportunities!

The Cataracts are best in the spring or just after a rain. But the refreshment of the swimming hole exists all the time. You can learn more about how to get there on alltrails.com.
