If you love autumn, Maine is pretty much paradise. With its endless forests of beautiful foliage, gorgeous mountains, and winding rivers, this state is the perfect place to get outside and enjoy the perks of the fall season. Embarking on this covered bridge hike is a great way to get your dose of fall magic.
The Sunday River Bridge is located in Sunday River, Newry. It’s often called the "Artist’s Bridge" because it’s so frequently painted and photographed. Once you visit, you’ll understand why.
This charming covered bridge was built in 1872 and is one of the state’s few surviving 19th-century covered bridges. These types of bridges are prone to decay due to their wooden construction and the effects of the harsh New England weather.
This bridge is perfect for strolling in the autumn, as it’s surrounded by leafy trees that glow with striking shades of orange, red, and yellow as soon as the cooler weather hits. The gurgling river below and the crisp fall air add to the scenic charm of this spot. There is a hiking trail along the river if you feel like stretching your legs, but simply hanging out near the bridge is enough to make your trip here worthwhile.
The bridge itself is about 100 feet long and 20 feet wide. It has a gorgeous gable roof protected by wooden shingles and is actually a popular spot for weddings. The bridge is open to pedestrian traffic only, so you don’t have to worry about cars zooming in and out while you’re trying to admire the view of Sunday River.
