Cathance River Trail Is A Beginner-Friendly Waterfall Trail In Maine That’s Great For A Family Hike
Discover the family-friendly Cathance River Trail in Maine, featuring a scenic waterfall and class IV rapids.
There's nothing we love more than getting outside to enjoy the nature of Maine! That's why warmer temperatures have us waking up with a spring in our step. Warmer, longer days mean lots of time to spend outdoors. We're even luckier since we're in Maine with access to trails like this one! Relatively short and flat, this route will lead you to a lovely waterfall. And it's great for a group with little legs.
There are a few beautiful trails in the Cathance River Nature Preserve in Topsham, but our favorite includes access to a beautiful waterfall area.
The area features hiking and cross-country ski trails all set within a lush forested landscape.
The Cathance River Trail is 4.3-miles and great for little legs, folks with less hiking experience, and others who prefer to enjoy a flat route over those with serious elevation.
The trail begins and follows the Cathance River for about 2 miles.
The route then veers slightly off the Preserve across a 60-foot footbridge.
The route itself is flat with packed dirt and gravel.
And throughout the hike you'll feel totally remote, despite the fact that bustling downtown areas are nearby.
Another reason that this hike is great for kids is the rapids found along the river. Rather than having to wait for a waterfall payoff, you'll see class IV rapids all along the way.
Plan your visit for springtime to see flowing water from snow melt, or in the summer just after a rain. This will ensure lots of waterfall action!
