Apple picking, fall foliage explorations and lots and lots of cider donuts. That's what fall in Maine is all about! And between the crisp temps and beautiful scenery, it's one of the best times to be outside. You can get out on a hike, or take a stroll in your own neighborhood but we love the idea of exploring a corn maze. This one is a great one to tackle!
Treworgy Family Orchards started with a dream in the 1980s. Gary Treworgy had just retired from the Merchant Marines and wanted to spend more time with his family. They purchased 18-acres of land and planted an orchard.
After some trials and tribulations, things came together and today the thriving family farm is operated by countless members of the family and local friends.
It's one of the best pick-your-own farms in the state, offering opportunities for farm days throughout the year.
There are lots of ways for families to enjoy their time here, from seeing the animals to gobbling up some tasty treats.
But one of the most well-known attractions at this family farm is the annual corn maze!
Things started in 2001 with a maze in the shape of a giant piece of popcorn. Today it's the longest continually running corn maze in Maine
Creation of the maze starts with an idea. After that the entire family comes together to make magic happen! The cornfield is planted, paths are carved and the annual map with riddles is created to be put at stations throughout the maze.
It takes around 60,000 corn plants create the maze each year. Typically,
the stalks grow to be about 10-feet tall!
The 2019 maze theme is "Blueberries for Sal" which feels so appropriate for Maine. And, just look at this photo for scale of just how large it is!
So, head to the farm and explore the unique them. Then, be sure to grab some special treats for the way home!
Treworgy Family Orchards is open Tuesday to Thursday and on Sunday from 10 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. and on Friday and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. You can learn more about them on their website or on Facebook. Entry to the corn maze for adults is $9, children 3-12 are $8 and children under 2 are free.
