The Toledo Bend Reservoir Is An Otherworldly Destination On The Louisiana Border

Toledo Bend Reservoir, the largest man-made body of water in the South, offers a variety of outdoor activities including fishing, boating, and camping.

As the summer draws closer, you'll want to start planning your weekends around getting outside and spending some time on the water. Luckily, Louisiana has no shortage of beautiful waterways to explore. There's one particular reservoir that's impressive, to say the least, and it should move to the top of your bucket list this year. Let's take a closer look at the Toledo Bend Reservoir, the largest man-made body of water in the South.

Located on the Sabine River between Texas and Louisiana, the Toledo Bend Reservoir is the fifth-largest man-made body of water in the country.

It's also the largest in Louisiana.

A joint effort between both states in the early 1950s procured the funds and build the dam, which was completed in 1969.

The dam was built without any assistance from the federal government, and it's capable of generating 92 megawatts of electrical power.

There are two state parks in Louisiana that are nestled along the reservoir: North Toledo Bend State Park and South Toledo Bend State Park.

Both offer beautiful views of the water and several amenities.

Toledo Bend attracts anglers from all over the country looking to snag a prized bass.

Fishing is one of the most popular activities, though boating and swimming are close behind!

With over 1,200 square miles of shoreline, you can always find a quiet spot to lounge around.

South Toledo Bend State park has a great little strip of sandy beach you can sink your toes into.

One of the best ways to experience Toledo Bend is by kayak or a canoe.

This really gives you a new perspective and it’s a great opportunity to spot wildlife. The area is a common nesting ground for bald eagles, so keep your eyes peeled to spot this majestic bird.

Both state parks are great for a weekend of camping.

Both offer primitive campsites, RV hook ups, as well as cabins rentals.

When you visit, be sure to stick around until dusk.

The calm waters from the reservoir really soak in the colors from the sunset, making the day that much more memorable.
