Louisiana has so many beautiful trails to explore, it's nearly impossible to hike them all (but wouldn't that be a great bucket list idea?) Each one offers unique glimpses at our lovely landscape, it’s hard to choose a favorite. If you’re looking to get outdoors and explore but maybe just something short and sweet, then this is the perfect trail for you.
The Barataria Preserve is a wonderful way to experience Louisiana’s natural landscape on foot.
Their address is 6588 Barataria Blvd, Marrero, LA 70072.
The welcome center includes exhibits that is a great educational experience for kids (and adults)
There are also bathrooms and water fountains available, and you can also purchase some guides, insect repellent, books, music, and more from the museum store.
The preserve’s 23,000 acres include bayous, marshes, swamps, forests, and tons of wildlife.
You’ll be surrounded by some of the most breathtaking scenery Louisiana can offer.
There are several trails you can explore, and most of them connect to each other, so you can mix and match.
They range from a quarter mile to 1.4 miles.
The Visitor Center Trail is a great place to start.
This .25-mile out-and-back boardwalk trail is great for kids, since it’s not too long, and there’s a ton to look at along the way.
There’s seating around the bald cypress area, and you’ll be surrounded by freshwater marsh.
The views are so spectacular, you’ll want to journey on to see what the other trails have in store.
As you stroll through the trail, keep your eyes peeled for alligators, turtles, and snakes.
There are also birds, raccoons, armadillos… Just about all the usual swamp creature suspects call this area home.
If you do continue on, we’d recommend the Marsh Overlook Trail.
The .4-boardwalk trail will lead you to a scenic marsh overlook where, on a clear day, you can see for miles. You can get to this trail from the Bayou Coquille Trail (.5 miles).
You can find Barataria Preserve at 6588 Barataria Blvd, Marrero, LA 70072.
