Clocking in at 1,300 ares, City Park is one of the largest and most visited urban parks in the country. With endless attractions and tons of beautiful scenery, it’s no wonder New Orleanians have been frequenting this park for generations, so let's take a look at just some of the attractions here.
City Park was established in in 1854, originally just taking up 100 acres.
It was officially named "City Park" in 1891, and has since sprawled out to an astounding 1,300 acres.
Did you know City Park has the world’s largest collection of mature live oak trees?
These beautiful, ancient oaks are iconic of the area, and there’s even one particular oak tree that dates back almost 800 years.
The attractions at City Park are endless.
From the sprawling green space to the sports fields, there’s truly something for everyone here.
Generations of kids have fond memories of visiting Storyland.
It’s impossible not to love Storyland! Visitors can climb aboard Captain Hook’s pirate shop, hop in Cinderella’s pumpkin carriage, or visit the home of the three little pigs in this magical place where your childhood fairytales comes to life.
The Carousel Gardens is a wonderful way to spend the afternoon.
The amusement park is home to the "flying horses", a wooden carousel is only one of 100 left in the country, and the only one in Louisiana. When it opened in 1897 it was originally mule-driven, but was updated to a mechanical carousel in 1906.
And there are five playgrounds too!
Scattered throughout City Park, kids will have a blast getting out some energy at one of these fun playgrounds.
A trip to City Park isn’t complete until you’ve strolled through the sculpture garden and the New Orleans Museum of Art.
The museum is the oldest fine arts institution in New Orleans and contains over 40,000 objects, truly a hidden gem in the city. Just outside of NOMA, five acres of sculpture gardens awaits you. Stroll through the wandering footpaths and view more than 60 sculptures that are nestled along the beautiful landscaping.
Speaking of gardens, the botanical garden is lovely this time of year.
The twelve acres of gardens are a delightful way to spend an hour or so. These carefully cultivated gardens feature everything from native plants, rose gardens, tropical gardens, and more.
While we’re on the subject, the wildflower fields are simply mesmerizing.
They seem to stretch on forever!
City Park also has dozens of opportunities for sports and recreation, too.
The sports fields are perfect for soccer lacrosse, rugby, softball, or flag football. There are also tennis courts available to rent, as well as a disc gold course and a putt-putt course.
You’re going to need some caffeine after all that, so be sure to head over to Morning Call for a quick pick-me-up.
This iconic coffee shop opened its doors in City Park in 2012, just remember that it’s cash only!
From the walking paths to the many secluded spots to sit back and take in the view, City Park has something for everyone.
