For beautiful emerald green views, towering cypress trees blowing in the wind, and some of the most beautiful natural scenery Louisiana can offer, a trip to the Black Bayou National Wildlife Refuge is in order. This peaceful paradise features over 4,000 acres to explore, and you’ll want to see it all. Let’s check it out.
The Black Bayou Lake National Wildlife Refuge was established in 1997 and is one of the most popular natural attractions in northeastern Louisiana.
Located in Monroe, it’s easy to see why this 4,600-acre refuge is so popular with nature lovers.
Studded with beautiful cypress and tupelo trees, the swampy views are truly mesmerizing.
The bottomland hardwoods mix with the upland pine/hardwoods, so you’ll also see cherry bark oak, cedar elm, ash, loblolly pines, and many other types of trees.
One of the main attractions to the refuge is the lake.
It’s open for fishing every day from dawn until dusk, which attracts many local fishermen looking to catch largemouth bass, bluegill, and crappie.
There’s a boardwalk trail that leads you around the Black Bayou Lake.
And you’ll have some beautiful views along the way.
Kids and adults of all ages will love the trail.
So bring the whole family!
You can also rent a kayak or a canoe and explore the lake from an entirely new perspective.
See the visitors center when you arrive for rental opportunities.
You'll be able to get much closer to those beautiful cypress knees and waterlilies.
Be sure to bring your camera.
It’s a great place to spot wildlife.
The refuge is home to countless migratory waterfowl, songbirds, and your usual swamp critters like alligators, raccoons, deer, turtles, and more. If you’re lucky, you might catch a glimpse of an eagle soaring overhead.
If you have the chance, stick around until sunset.
Bring some bug spray with you - it’ll be worth it!
When the sun starts to set behind the trees, you’ll be treated to a colorful sunset reflected in the still waters.
There’s no better way to end the day than with a beautiful sunset!
But even if you can't stay until dusk, you're still in for a memorable afternoon.
Spending the day surrounded by Louisiana's natural landscape is always an adventure.
