We Love Our National Parks, But This Kentucky Park Is Just As Thrilling

With natural wonders both above and below ground, this state park is a treasure trove of adventure.

Kentucky's most famous natural wonders are mostly underground, revealing a subterranean world that draws visitors from around the globe. Mammoth Cave National Park, home to the world's largest known cave system, welcomes nearly 600,000 visitors annually. And while this landmark is certainly worth checking out, it's important to remember that there are other equally impressive parks located throughout the Bluegrass. Carter Caves State Resort Park is one such place, and the next time you feel compelled to explore the caves and skip the crowds, we'd recommend visiting.

Carter Caves State Resort Park is located in Kentucky's Carter County, which is known for housing the largest concentration of caves in the state. The state park showcases a unique and complex cave system of 20 different caverns. But the natural wonders aren't just below ground; above ground, visitors can marvel at five unique natural bridges. Not to mention the network of wooded trails, paddling adventures, fishing, gem mining, and more that promise an incredible visit for all ages.

If it's your very first trip to Carter Caves State Resort Park, a cave tour is a must. Exploring a subterranean world formed over millions of years is an unforgettable experience, and thankfully, year-round walking tours of Cascade Cave and X-Cave are offered daily. Or, if you're up for a more rugged adventure, opt for a seasonal exploratory tour of Bat Cave or Saltpeter Cave. You'll be provided with coveralls, headlamps, helmets, and kneepads, so prepare to get muddy!

As for hiking trails, a few stand out as the park's most loved. The Three Bridges Trail is a moderate 3.2-mile loop trail featuring three natural bridges. Hikers appreciate that the paths are well-marked, well-maintained, and are seldom crowded. Parts of the trek take you by some cliffs, so as always, tread carefully! Alternatively, the 1.4-mile Horn Hollow Trail takes you by some cave entrances and follows a creek. If you'd like to explore some of the caves from the trail, be sure to get a permit from the Visitors Center beforehand.

Anglers will want to spend some time at Smoky Valley Lake, which happens to be Kentucky's first trophy bass lake. The pond is home to bluegill, catfish, crappie, and largemouth bass. Licenses are required for everyone—be sure to stop by the front desk before your fishing adventure.

And if you're thinking that this park has too much to enjoy in a single day, you're absolutely right! Make the most of all that Carter Caves has to offer by reserving a campsite or room at the lodge.
