So much planning, time, and effort go into creating a new trail in Kentucky, so when one opens up, it's a big deal and definitely something to celebrate. Rail trails make up some of the best ways to experience the outdoors in Kentucky and you're going to love the Prestonsburg Passage Rail Trail. Located in eastern Kentucky, this beautiful area is jam-packed with things to do outside, all year long. This rail trail in Kentucky winds through a beautiful natural landscape and has many unique features that have quickly made it a must-try trail in the Bluegrass.
Within the scenic natural beauty of Prestonsburg, Kentucky, you'll find a path that was once a railway line.
Thanks to a grant, 8.6 miles of this track have been transformed into a rail trail in Kentucky. It opened in August of 2020 and will likely become a favorite hiking and biking trail in the state.
One easy way to get to the Prestonsburg Passage Rail Trail is by way of Archer Park.
This large, family-friendly park has so much to offer visitors and it also has a short connector to get to the Passage. There's plenty of parking, facilities, and other things to do within the park, making this a great day trip spot.
Once you're on the trail, you'll be pleasantly surprised to find a fully asphalt path that's accessible to all.
It's also practically flat, which is not what you'd expect in this area of Kentucky. Walkers, runners, cyclists, strollers, and wheelchairs are all welcome on the trail.
The 8.6-mile trail goes out and back to the former coal town of David, so a round trip would be 17.2 miles.
If you begin at Archer Park, after about 6 miles you'll reach this unique spot. You may want to take a break here and snap a picture of this unique bridge along the trail.
This is actually one of several restored bridges along the route, but is definitely the most memorable.
The top half of a school bus has been turned into a covered bridge, and you have to admire the creativity and repurposing initiative.
This trail is also a great adventure for history buffs, with several historical markers and sites along the way.
You can stop at Middle Creek National Battlefield, as well as other notable sites. And of course, the scenery in the area is beautiful all year long.
The Prestonsburg Passage Rail Trail may already be known by locals, but it's on its way to becoming a statewide favorite.
