8 Reasons No One In Their Right Mind Visits Kentucky In The Winter

Kentucky is a wonderful place to visit, but is it just as nice to visit in the dead of winter? We are known for our bluegrass, hiking trails, bourbon and festivals, so why would anyone want to come here when it's not even fun to be outside? Hopefully you've gathered that we're being a bit sarcastic here, because of course we love Kentucky any time of year! But it turns out that there are a few good reasons to steer clear of the Bluegrass State in the winter—and also a few reasons that aren't exactly valid.

1. You never know what weather you'll get in Kentucky.

It may be winter, but you can visit Kentucky and find 70 degrees and sunshine! And then don't be surprised if two days later we are facing an ice storm and blizzard. It's been known to happen...a lot.

2. The bluegrass is definitely not blue in the winter.

It's actually never really blue, but more of a rich green like you see in the sunny photo above. And in the winter, the fields of Kentucky's horse country are more of a dull shade of tan. It's actually more beautiful when covered in a blanket of snow!

3. Our lakes are no fun in the winter.

Okay, so this is sort of true. Look at the two photos above, both of Pennyrile Forest State Resort Park, and don't deny that the summer photo is more appealing. In the winter, you can't speed around on a boat, or relax on a sandy beach, or water ski with friends. You can get some pretty beautiful views, though.

4. And speaking of skiing...

If you enjoy skiing, then Kentucky is not the place for you in the winter. Unless there is some super secret place that we have yet to discover (and if there is, please let us know!), there is absolutely no place in Kentucky to ski.

5. There also aren't many festivals throughout Kentucky in the winter.

During the summer, you could hop from town to town, visiting a new festival each weekend. But during the winter, the festivities head indoors.

6. There's no place cozy to stay in the winter.

Total sarcasm here! Of course there are plenty of lodges, bed and breakfasts, even treehouses where you can spend the night during the winter time in Kentucky. DuPont Lodge in Cumberland Falls State Resort Park is shown above.

7. There's no beautiful scenery in the winter.

A frozen waterfall isn't that magical, right? We may not have ski resorts, but a hike to these frozen waterfalls would probably make for a pretty epic outdoor experience in the winter.

8. Bourbon tastes better in the summer.

Ha! We all know this just isn't true. Bourbon is good all year long, and tastes especially good after a drive past the not-so-blue grass, the frozen lakes and waterfalls, the empty fair grounds, en route to a cozy spot in Kentucky—which turns out is a pretty nice place to visit in the winter.
