The Heart-Stopping Cave Tour In Kentucky You Won’t Find Anywhere Else

Mammoth Cave in Kentucky offers a variety of tours, including the popular Historic Tour, showcasing the world's longest cave system.

There are many things about Kentucky that make it a wonderful travel destination, and one of those features is Mammoth Cave. This National Park attracts visitors from all over the world, but it is also a must-visit for every Kentuckian, as we are very lucky to have the longest cave system on the planet right here in our state. You can take a variety of tours that lead you down into Mammoth Cave, and they vary in intensity. One of the most popular options is the Historic Tour, which includes a heart-stopping portion that you won't find anywhere else.

Mammoth Cave is, without a doubt, one of the best attractions we have in the state of Kentucky. The fact that it is a natural wonder and the longest known cave system in the world, makes it that much more fascinating.

If you've never been to Mammoth Cave, then you may not realize that several different tours are offered at various times throughout the year. These tours range is length, difficulty, and content in terms of which areas of the cave you are experiencing. One of the most popular options, especially for a first time visitor, is the Historic Tour.

This is a two-hour tour that takes you through the natural opening of the cave and down into its mysterious domes and passageways. You'll get to see the same cave landmarks that have been visited by writers, scientists, military figures, and celebrities of the 1800s and early 1900s.

While most of the tour is in open spaces, there is one section that is not for the faint of heart. Whimsically named "Fat Man's Misery," be prepared to duck down and maneuver through a tight pathway in the cave.

In contrast to the spacious domes of the other sections of the cave, this portion is quite tight.

If you sign up for this tour, know that almost everyone can make their way through, but it is much more confined than what you experience on the rest of the tour.

This particular tour also includes 440 stairs and is rated moderately difficult. It's a wonderful, well-rounded experience for all cave visitors, including families, and will teach you the incredible history of this Kentucky landmark.

These tours take adventurers through miles of Mammoth Cave, but there is actually so much more that has yet to be discovered. The photo below shows a lower level passage leading to an area that is still being explored.

If Fat Man's Misery and the Historic Tour do not provide enough of a thrill for you, there are other heart-stopping experiences available as well, such as the Wild Cave Tour, where you can really have a one-of-a-kind adventure right here in Kentucky.
