Some hidden gems in Kentucky are hiding in plain sight, maybe behind a restaurant door on Main Street or along a clearly marked hiking trail. But a true hidden gem takes some effort to find and a sense of adventure that allows the process of tracking it down to be enjoyable. There are so many waterfalls in Kentucky, and several are very easy to reach. But this lesser-known trail in Kentucky is near one of the most recognizable Kentucky waterfalls – Cumberland Falls – and it can definitely be challenging to find. But once you locate the trail to Amos Falls and the waterfall itself, you’ll realize you’ve discovered a magical hidden gem that was worth the effort.
Not far from Cumberland Falls State Resort Park is another waterfall that isn't nearly as well known.
Amos Falls can be found on a trail off a road by the same name. While it is within Daniel Boone National Forest and is an official, 2.2-mile loop trail, many have never heard of it or struggle to find where to begin and how to continue along the rugged path.
If you want to try and find the trailhead, you'll want to visit the AllTrails site (link at the end of article). There are directions shared there from hikers who have been able to locate it.
The condition of the trail and the waterfall itself is very much dependent on the time of year and the weather. The area stays beautifully green throughout all four seasons, but in the summer you do want to be prepared for ticks and other insects along the path.
You'll follow the green ribbons that mark the trail and it won't take too long to reach Amos Falls, one of the most elusive of all waterfalls in Kentucky.
After a rainfall or melting snow, these falls are just lovely and the green pool at the base makes for picture-perfect scenery.
Because this is a lesser-known trail, expect solitude and a serene atmosphere on your hike, but definitely come prepared.
This is probably not the best hike for those with no experience (or a poor sense of direction). But if you feel like you've tried all of the hiking trails in Kentucky, then see if you can track down Amos Falls.
And don't be afraid to visit in the winter, as the scenery is even more magical.
If you know what to expect from this rugged trail in DBNF, then you'll leave satisfied with your adventure. Be sure to leave this naturally beautiful place as pristine as when you arrived and enjoy a trail that could actually be considered off the beaten path.
Seeking out a lesser-known trail in Kentucky or one of the more elusive waterfalls in Kentucky are great ways to have an adventure and when there’s a waterfall to chase, that’s even better. Amos Falls and the trail to find it are not overly accessible, but when you visit on one of those magical days when the conditions are right, your efforts will be worth it.
