The Most Romantic Valentine’s Day Hike You’ll Find in Kansas

The Konza Prairie is an incredible Kansas region where nature is allowed to exist untouched and unaltered. Made up of 3,487 hectares of native tallgrass prairie and seemingly endless rolling hills, the prairie is everything right about the Sunflower State; and believe it or not, it makes for a truly romantic escape for couples who prefer incredible views over, say, a box of chocolates.

'Tis the season for romance, of course, so if you're the kind of person who enjoys a nice, romantic hiking trip, look no further than the Konza Prairie Nature Loop, which trades its usual busy hustle and bustle in the warmer months for peace and quiet in the cooler months. The views go on forever, and the hills roll on beyond the horizon. For lovers of sunsets (or sunrises), it's a must.

The trail is just under three miles long and is rated moderately difficult; it can be challenging for anyone who doesn't do well with inclines. There's nothing overtly dramatic about these inclines, but they might pose a problem for those with mobility issues (my knee only allows me to hike this trail on the days it's behaving, for example).

You'll find yourself meandering through Kansas's beautiful backcountry. Explore the tree-lined banks of Kings Creek, which is often frozen over in the winter, and wander off on a short spur you'll discover along the way to find the old Hokanson Homestead, which was built in 1878 and still stands to this day.

Unfortunately, dogs are not allowed on this hike, so you'll have to leave your furry bestie at home for this one. Once you've explored the homestead, return to the main trail and continue on to the incredible, rolling Flint Hills, where you'll be blown away by the natural splendor of Kansas in all its glory.

Remember that even though it's winter, hydration is still incredibly important; pack plenty of water and know there is not much shade along the way for this hike. Sunblock and warm clothing are also musts.

The views are to die for, so snuggle up to your special someone and enjoy them together.
