We may be a landlocked state, but that doesn't mean there aren't some great beaches in Kansas - no need to catch a flight to the coast when we've got so many amazing lake areas right here in the Sunflower State! One of the state's most popular lakes is Wilson Lake, a 9,045-acre man-made reservoir that's surrounded by several parks. The lake has over 100 miles of shoreline, so it's no surprise that there are plenty of recreational areas along its shores. If you're looking to cool off on a hot day by swimming, it doesn't get much better than a visit to Minooka Park because it's right along Wilson Lake and features a great sandy beach in Lucas, Kansas that will make you feel like you traveled to the ocean.
Wilson Lake is such an incredible spot. People travel from all over the state to enjoy fishing, hiking, kayaking, mountain biking, hunting, and more here.
Minooka Park, tucked away on the lake's south end in Lucas, is one of the many parks that surround Wilson Lake.
There are around 150 campsites here, so if you're looking for a few days' respite from the hustle and bustle of life, this is the place!
The park's name is derived from an Otoe word meaning "good earth," which is quite fitting, as this area of the Smoky Hills is amazing. You'll find tons of interesting rock formations here.
There's also plenty of prairie grass scenery, too.
You'll even find that Minooka Park has some sandy beaches just perfect for dipping your toes in the water!
Just enjoying the serenity of a waterside stroll is a pretty relaxing way to spend a summer's day.
We may not have ocean access, but that doesn't mean there aren't great beaches in Kansas.
For safety's sake, make sure to only swim in designated swim areas (you'll find several in the parks around Wilson Lake, including Minooka Park). Stock up on all your hot weather gear like sunscreen and flip-flops at REI.
