Experience Fall in This Underrated Kansas State Park
This Kansas State Park is the perfect destination for your fall adventures.
I don’t know about you, but fall is the time of year I want to spend outdoors the most. Something about the leaves changing color, the temperature getting just cool enough, and all the hot apple cider that I can drink — it all just makes me want to go out in nature. Kansas, often called the "Bread Basket State," might be known for its rolling prairies and tall grass, but in autumn, it transforms into one of the most beautiful states to explore. If you’re looking for some outdoor adventure this fall, my personal recommendation would be to go check out Kanopolis State Park. The fall colors will not disappoint.
Established in 1955, Kanopolis has the honor of being Kansas’ first inducted state park. It is situated along the rolling hills, bluffs, and woods of the Smoky Hills region, and is filled with sandstone bluffs, caves, crevices, and canyons. With 30 miles of trail, 12,500 acres of wildlife area, and a 3,500-acre lake, there is plenty to do and see in this beautiful park.
One of the most interesting sights for me was the Faris Caves. A pair of artificially carved caverns dating back to the late 1800s, these caves have been used for quite a few different things. Originally serving as a miner’s refuge, they also served as a milk house, living quarters, and even a schoolhouse for an extended period of time. Can you imagine going to school in a cave?
If you’re a hiker, you’ll certainly have your choice of trails to explore. One of the most notable is Horse Thief Trail, a 1.9-mile loop that takes just under an hour to complete. The scenery is filled with rock formations and great views, and if you keep your eyes peeled, you might even catch a few lizards along the way.
There’s also the Horse Thief Canyon Trail, but I’d only recommend it for the experienced trekker. At 9.1 miles in length, this loop takes about three and a half hours to complete. It’s a challenge, that’s for sure, but it comes with rewarding views of the canyon walls, fascinating rock formations, and interesting foliage. This trail is also popular for horseback riding, which the park also offers as an option.
If you’re looking to stay a night or two, Kanopolis has six deluxe cabins that can be reserved, providing easy access to the lake and the rest of the park. Imagine sitting around a crackling fire, roasting marshmallows, and watching the moon shimmer across the lake. Top that off with a mug of hot cider, and that sounds like a perfect way to spend a fall evening.
Kanopolis is a beautiful state park that is really best experienced in autumn. With the weather just right and the trees turning wonderful shades of orange, red, and yellow, this state park is not to be missed.
