The Easy Trail That Just Might Be The Best Wooded Hike In Kansas

The Sunflower State isn't exactly known for its wooded regions. When most people picture Kansas, they imagine flat prairies and grasslands, with nary a tree in sight. We do have much more of a diverse landscape than many people give us credit for, but, in truth, we are one of the least-forested states. There are lots of great hiking trails in Kansas, but if you find yourself looking for a great shaded trail that winds through acres and acres of woods, you might have a bit of a tough time. Those seeking trails near Overland Park, KS are in luck, though: the Tomahawk Creek Trail in Leawood's Foxhill South Park is a wonderful hike that's got quite a bit of trees. It'll make you feel like you're in a much more wooded area than Kansas. Check it out:

Foxhill South Park is a six-acre park that's in the Overland Park/Leawood area. It's home to a few picnic tables and has access to the popular Indian Creek biking and hiking trail.

The great trail here that connects to the Indian Creek route is the Tomahawk Creek Trail. At 10.8 miles, it may seem a bit intimidating, but the point-to-point hike is paved and relatively flat.

The trail is wheelchair and stroller-accessible, and there are benches throughout for resting.

You'll enjoy great views of the creek along the route.

If you explore the trail in its entirety on foot, it will take about three and a half hours. It's also a great option for bicyclists.

All of the trees here provide a great deal of shade during the warm months, giving you shelter from the hot sun.
