This Scenic Kansas Trail Is Even Better in the Winter
Looking for the best winter hikes in Kansas? The White Tail Loop Trail delivers frosty landscapes, tranquil forests, and moody winter views. It's the perfect adventure if you want to feel both calm and invigorated.
I definitely prefer winter to summer, especially for hiking. (I'm sure I would think differently if I lived up north, however!). There's a stillness in the air that's so calming, and less color in the landscape allows me to focus more deeply on my thoughts. If you feel the same way, the White Tail Loop Trail at Wyandotte County Lake Park is one of the best winter hikes in Kansas to take this season. It's easy and just the right length to enjoy the wintry ambiance without freezing to death.
Bundle up for a refreshing winter hike on the White Tail Loop Trail in Kansas City. This 4-mile loop winds through the trees to Wyandotte County Lake, a 400-acre oasis that's popular for boating and fishing in the summer. But when the temperature dips below freezing and snow begins to fall, the lake often freezes over, its icy surface shimmering in the sunlight.
The well-maintained trail is suitable for beginners, with an elevation gain of roughly 300 feet. It's beautiful all year, but when the trees are bare, and snow covers the ground, it's downright magical. Fewer people visit the park in the winter, so there's a good chance you won't encounter any other hikers. That's my favorite part of getting outdoors in the cold; hiking is already one of my favorite ways to clear my head, and it's so much easier to do that when nobody else is around.
Of course, I can't guarantee there will be snow when you visit, but regardless, it's a worthwhile adventure. The pale, dreary winter skies and frosty branches evoke feelings of peace that follow you with every step you take. And the layer of mist hanging over the lake adds a moody ambiance to the scene. Snow is the icing on the cake, but you can rest assured the hike will be memorable even if Mother Nature doesn't cooperate. But if you do get to walk in a winter wonderland, prepare to be enchanted at the sight of the sun's rays reflecting on the snow. You might even see colorful winter berries growing on the trees!
Whether you come solo or bring a friend, the White Tail Loop Trail will quickly become one of your favorite cold-weather hiking trails in Kansas. Furry friends are welcome, too! It's a very dog-friendly trail since there are no steep inclines, jagged rocks, or other obstacles, so your pooch can frolic in the snow until their heart's content.
