This Hidden Gem Waterfall in Kansas Is the Perfect Dupe for Niagara Falls
If you haven't yet been to Cowley County State Lake to see its remarkable waterfall, what are you waiting for?
While no place can quite capture the beauty, majesty, and sheer power of Niagara Falls, there's a hidden gem waterfall in Kansas that's a great dupe if you can't make it to New York or Canada. Cowley Lake Waterfall may be man-made, but it's no less an impressive attraction in the Sunflower State. If you haven't yet been to Cowley County State Lake to see its remarkable waterfall, what are you waiting for?
Below is Niagara Falls on the border of New York and Canada. Comprised of three separate waterfalls, it's one of the most enchanting natural wonders in the world. Now, I think we all can understand that no other place on Earth compares to Niagara Falls, but as far as waterfalls in Kansas go, Cowley Lake Waterfall is as close as it gets.
Niagara Falls is also one of the most popular attractions in the world, with 12-14 million people visiting each year. On the other hand, Cowley Lake Waterfall is a true hidden gem, and while we will never know the exact number of visitors, it's safe to say it does not receive anywhere close to Niagara's visitor count.
While the cascades of Niagara Falls are between 70 and 188 feet, Cowley Lake Waterfall is only 25 feet tall. However, it's quite impressive for Kansas and a great alternative if you cannot travel far. This Kansas cascade was created by a spillway at the 84-acre Cowley State Fishing Lake and, in the past, was named one of the top Most Beautiful Waterfalls in the U.S. by Yahoo! Travel.
Cascading over a shelf of tall red rock, Cowley Lake Waterfall is picture-perfect and creates a serene natural scene. Its waters tumble into a pool below and eventually flow downstream through the woods. If you're wondering if you can swim in the pool below the falls, the short answer is yes. However, I suggest wearing water shoes if you intend to wade in this swimming hole.
While tucked away off U.S. Highway 166 in Dexter, KS, the waterfall is quite accessible when wandering through the park surrounding the lake. Just look out for the signs to find it. It's also a bit tricky to get close to the waterfall and its swimming hole, so wear appropriate footwear and exercise extreme caution.
